Isaak Walton
Isaak Walton was born in 1593 in Stafford, England. Largely self-educated, he was widely read and enjoyed friendships with many scholars and writers of his day. He became known as a biographer of some of these friends, particularly John Donne. His best known work, The Compleat Angler, was both a practical outdoorsman’s guide and philosophical exploration of man’s relationship to nature. It is among the most reprinted books in British history. He suffered the death of two wives and all seven of his children, and in 1662 was invited to live as a guest of the Bishop of Winchester. He was buried in Winchester Cathedral in 1683.
