Today we celebrate the memorial of St. Vincent de Paul, a French priest who died in 1660 after a lifetime of serving the poor. Founded over 170 years ago, today’s Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a lay organization, proclaims the dual goal of helping its members toward spiritual growth through service to the poor, “Energized by the awareness that service to our brother and sister in need is in fact an encounter with our Lord Jesus Christ…” [National Council of the United States Society of St. Vincent de Paul].
How heartened the Society must be by Pope Francis’ own dedication to the poor. There is certainly no shortage of need or opportunity for us to share our blessings with the less fortunate. Perhaps St. Vincent de Paul can light your way in finding a way to serve that can bless you both.
“Charity is infinitely inventive.”
—St. Vincent de Paul
Wishing you every blessing today,
